June 7, 1970 - The Who become the first act to perform rock music ( "Tommy" )
at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York
June 10 - President Nixon signs bill lowering voting age to 18
July 4 - " American Top 40 " debuts on 5 U.S. stations with Casey Kasem as host.
July 16 - Three Rivers Stadium opens in Pittsburgh
September 10 & 11 - Chevrolet Vega , Ford Pinto introduced.
October 4 - Rock and blues singer Janis Joplin dies in her LA hotel room from an overdose of heroin.
November 3 - Democrats sweep the U.S. Congressional midterm elections; Ronald Reagan is reelected governor of
California; Jimmy Carter is elected governor of Georgia.
November 14 - Southern Airlines Flight 932 crashes in Wayne County, WV; all 75 on board, including
37 players and 5 coaches from the Marshall University team, are killed. Less well remembered
today is that just six weeks earlier on Oct. 2, 1970 an eerily similar event occurred in which the
Wichita State University football team's "Gold" plane crashed in Colorado killing most
of their players.
December 29 - President Richard Nixon signs into law the Occupational Safety and Health Act ( OSHA )
December 31 - Paul McCartney sues in Great Britain to dissolve the Beatles' legal partnership
January 12, 1971 -The landmark sitcom All In The Family starring Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker,
debuts on CBS
January 17 - The Baltimore Colts defeat the Dallas Cowboys 16–13 at the Orange Bowl in Super Bowl V
February 8 - A new stock market index called the Nasdaq debuts
February 28 - Evel Knievel sets a world record and jumps 19 cars
March 8 - Boxer Joe Frazier defeats Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden
March 28 – The Ed Sullivan Show airs its final episode
April 24 - 500,000 people in Washington and 125,000 in San Francisco march in protest against the Vietnam War
May 1 - Amtrak begins inter-city rail passenger service
June 4th, 1971 - CH.S. Class of 1971 Graduates
